Easy phones for seniors: senior handset or locked smartphone?

Count decisions, not buttons

On an ordinary smartphone a call takes roughly five decisions: unlock, find the right icon, open contacts, find the right name in a list, press call. Every step is a chance to get stuck.

A good solution for someone who struggles to find their way around the phone cuts that to one decision: tap the face. That is the yardstick to measure every option against.

Senior handsets

The upside is physical buttons, low cost and durability. The downside is that the menus are still there behind the buttons, that speed dials are numbers rather than faces, and that it is usually one more device to keep charged.

For someone with reduced vision or dexterity alone, a senior handset can be plenty. For someone with memory loss or aphasia, it rarely is.

Locked smartphones

An ordinary Android phone locked to a single calling screen keeps what is good about a smartphone — good audio, a good screen, security updates, a phone that looks like any other phone — and removes everything that makes the screen hard to read.

It can also be the phone the person already owns and is used to holding. That matters more than people expect.

Cost over time

Do not count the purchase price alone. Count the plan, who maintains the device, and what happens when it needs replacing.

How to test without gambling

Set it up and leave it alone for two weeks without re-explaining it every day. If the person places a call themselves at least once in that time, you have found the right fit. If nobody touches it, change course — and insist on being able to get your money back.
